Across into Mexico
Created by ship 11 years ago
Big brother and I had many great adventures together, sometimes with conspiring friends to add to the mix. Into Mexico started when Don suggested, for my 16th birthday as sort of a right of passage, we drive down from San Jose to Tijuana with Don's friend Bob Yoskowitz. Bob liked to stir things up especially in this small border town. We drove down in Don's beautiful 1959 red and white chevy, you know, the one with the big tail fins. Our plan was to smuggle as much Bacardy Rum back across the border and distribute to friends.
My two older tour guides showed me the more interesting parts of this thriving community of street vendors and strip clubs. Sort of an eye opener for me. Anyway, we
chased around and were chased around for a couple of days.
Finally, the smugglers devised a plan to pull out the back seat to the 59 Chevy and pack in at least 20 bottles of Bacardy's best, a big investment for these two 20 years old San Jose Smugglers. They put the seat back in to cover up the goods so we could pass through Border Customs undetected. I was sitting in the back seat sweating bullets as we approached the inspection station. As we slowed to a stop the bottles started to roll into each other making a clanging noise that I knew would give away our plan to the officials. No one else heard what I heard. We made it through and celebrated our good fortunes back to San Jose.
